Seven Pearl Care Tips

Indeed, pearls are beautiful to look at. These look fragile and strong at the same time. Pearls may be durable but it needs extra special care in order for it to maintain its beauty. Pearl jewelries are unique that is why it would be a great thing to do if you keep them in perfect shape. Here are some pearl jewelry care tips.

1. Before you store your precious pearls in your jewelry box, it would be best to wipe them with a soft damp cloth. Body oils, dust and dirt if not removed can cause your precious pearls to get discolored.

Once the pearls are discolored, it would be pretty hard to restore them thus these will permanently lose their beauty. It would also be better if you use a lint free cloth in order to avoid scratching the surfaces of your pearls. Scratches are also detrimental to your pearls outward beauty and appearance.

2. After wiping with a damp lint free cloth, do not forget to air dry your pearls. Air drying will prevent residue build up.

3. When storing your pearls, place them inside a soft or fabric lined jewelry box or pouch. Keep in mind that pearls should not come in contact with other jewelries especially diamond jewelries because this can result to scratches.

Other than keeping it from bumping with other types of jewelry, you should also keep it from bumping into hard objects. So be careful where you place your pearls and avoid slamming them down after you take them off.

In addition, it is also advisable that you only use pearls if you are wearing something made of soft materials. Do not wear pearls when you are wearing wool clothing.

4. Acidic substances are also dangerous for your pearls so as much as possible keep them away from substances like alcohol, vinegar, hair spray, bleach, perfume and of course, cosmetics.

Do not wear pearls if you are going swimming in the pool; the chlorinated water can still damage it. Put on your pearl jewelries only after putting on make-up and setting your hair. If you are wearing pearls to a party and some drinking is involved, be cautious enough not to spill any alcohol on your pearl jewelries especially your pearl bracelet and ring. It is also advisable to wear pearls on your clothing rather than directly unto your skin.

5. Do not keep your pearls stored inside the jewelry box for long periods of time. It would be great if you wear them every two weeks or once a month. Remember that pearls are made from organic and natural substances so it is only natural for them to crave for air. The fresh air can help maintain the moisture in your pearl jewelries thus keeping them lustrous.

6. If you want to wash your pearl jewelries, you can wash them using mild, detergent free soaps. You can use ivory flakes or baby soap. You can soak your pearls in it for a few seconds.

Remember not to use any scrubber because its abrasive surface can damage the nacre of the pearls. Use only your hands when scrubbing. Do not forget to rinse and dry your pearls. When drying, do not hang your pearl jewelries; instead, lay them down on a piece of cloth to dry them.

7. It is also advisable that you restring your pearl jewelry every two years especially if you use them frequently. The silk thread used to hold your pearls together weakens over time so don't wait for it to break apart. Have your pearl jewelry restringed at a jewelry store.
